Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is now available on macOS, bringing one of the most popular real time strategy games on Windows to Mac for the first time in nearly two decades. The release was announced by Feral Interactive and Microsoft's World's Edge studio.
The game launched on May 28 and is available through Steam and the Feral Store, priced at $34.99. A Mac App Store version is also in the works and is expected to arrive later this year.
What's Included
The macOS version arrives as an Apple Silicon native build, optimized for modern Macs. It carries more than two decades of refinements over the 1999 original, including 4K visuals, a remastered soundtrack, new animations, and a range of quality of life improvements.
The base game includes three expansions: "Lords of the West," "Dynasties of India," and "Dawn of the Dukes." Each one adds new campaigns and civilizations.
A large selection of additional DLC is available for purchase on both stores, including the recently released "The Last Chieftains." A $146.89 "Ultimate Bundle" packages the base game with further content such as "Return of Rome," "The Mountain Royals," "Victors and Vanquished," and "The Three Kingdoms."
Multiplayer
The fast paced Skirmish mode pits players against up to eight opponents, either offline against the AI or online against other Mac gamers. Online multiplayer also includes cooperative campaigns with historical scenarios to tackle as allies.
Multiplayer is supported between Mac players. Cross play with the Windows, Xbox, and PlayStation versions is not supported.
Existing Owners
Players who already own Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on Steam will automatically receive access to the macOS version at no additional cost. Feral Interactive has also published a newcomer's guide for the Mac release.
A Return to the Mac
The launch marks the return of a franchise that was largely absent from Apple platforms for years. The original Age of Empires, its sequels, and Age of Mythology all received official Mac ports under MacSoft up until the early 2000s, with Age of Empires II reaching the Mac in 2001.
Microsoft did not restart the porting process as newer remasters and installments arrived in recent years. Before this release, Mac players who wanted to play the Definitive Edition generally relied on compatibility tools, cloud gaming, or a separate Windows setup.
It is not yet clear whether the franchise's other recent Definitive Edition titles will follow to macOS. For now, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is available on Steam and the Feral Store, with the Mac App Store version still to come.
