Apple Announces iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable iPhone

Apple today announced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, which opens from a 5.4-inch outer display into a 7.6-inch inner display and starts at $1,999.

The device was unveiled at Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, and it goes on sale later than the rest of the fall hardware.

Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23. That is more than a month after the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max reach stores.

Displays

The iPhone Duo uses a book-style folding design. The 7.6-inch inner display carries a nano-texture finish that Apple says reduces glare and minimizes the visible crease. Apple describes it as the largest display it has ever put in an iPhone, with 50 percent more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The 5.4-inch outer display provides more than 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro, so the closed device functions as a full phone rather than a compromised cover screen. Both displays support ProMotion, Always On, and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness.

When unfolded, the Duo measures 5.2 mm thick, which Apple says makes it the thinnest iPhone ever.

Chip and connectivity

The iPhone Duo runs the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro models. The A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process and pairs a 6-core CPU with a 7-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. It is cooled by a vapor chamber.

For wireless, the Duo uses Apple's N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, along with the C2 modem. MagSafe and Qi2 both charge at up to 25W.

Cameras

The Duo has a dual 48MP rear camera system, with a Main and an Ultra Wide lens. There is no telephoto lens, and the Duo does not include the variable aperture camera that Apple introduced on the iPhone 18 Pro this year.

On the front, a 12MP Center Stage camera handles selfies, and a separate under-display FaceTime camera sits behind the inner screen.

Four camera features are exclusive to the Duo and make use of the outer display: Smart Take, which fires the shutter when everyone is posed, Duo Preview, which shows subjects a live preview, Kid Cue which plays animations for children, and Duo FaceTime, which lets nearby friends join a call.

Battery and charging

The Duo uses a dual-cell battery, with one cell on each side of the device, and Apple says the two operate together as a single unit. It is rated at up to 24 hours of typical use. Wired charging reaches 50 percent in about 20 minutes with a 60W USB-C adapter, and yes it does have MagSafe and Wireless Charging.

Touch ID and the hinge

Apple replaced Face ID with Touch ID, which is built into the side button.

The custom hinge uses more than 100 precision components, and Apple pairs it with a multi-layer lamination design that lets the display's layers glide against one another as the device folds. A titanium plate forms the bottom layer for durability. The enclosure is Grade 5 titanium.

Software and accessories

The iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27, which adapts to the device's different positions and orientations. It supports Split View multitasking, hands-free FaceTime and video, and a reimagined StandBy. Apple says Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is coming later this year rather than at launch.

Two first-party cases are available: a Duo Folio case with a built-in kickstand, and an iPhone Duo Case made of two parts that wrap around each half of the device.

Pricing and colors

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and is offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities, topping out at $3,199. It comes in two colors, star white and night sky.

Pre-orders open Friday, October 16, with availability on Friday, October 23. Apple has not issued a separate press release for the Duo, but its product page and tech specs page are live.
