Apple has previewed iOS 27, the next major version of its iPhone software, with the headline feature being an overhauled Siri AI assistant powered by Apple Intelligence.
The update is set to arrive this fall, though some of its marquee features will roll out on a slower timeline.
Siri AI is the centerpiece of the release. Apple describes it as a conversational assistant with new capabilities, expanded world knowledge, and a dedicated app.
The company says Siri AI will arrive in English later this year, after iOS 27 itself ships.

All new Siri AI
The reworked Siri is built around natural conversation. Apple says users can type or talk to Siri AI, ask open ended questions, brainstorm ideas, and carry on back and forth exchanges rather than issuing one off commands.
Siri AI also draws on personal context. Apple says it can surface a photo from years ago, locate an email buried in an inbox, or pull up a saved note, all from a plain language request.
The assistant can take action inside apps including Messages, Music, and Reminders based on what the user is doing at the time. Apple's examples include editing a message just after it was sent and adding a song heard in the car to a workout playlist.
For general questions, Siri AI taps into broad world knowledge and can reference information online to provide current answers, ranging from factual queries to recipes and restaurant recommendations.

A dedicated Siri app
iOS 27 introduces a standalone Siri app that collects conversations in one place. Apple says a question started on iPhone can be picked up later on iPad or Mac and conversations can be pinned for quick access.
Users will also be able to customize how Siri sounds. After picking a voice, Apple says listeners can adjust expressivity and pace. That level of voice tuning is limited to newer hardware, including iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.

A feature called Write with Siri extends to nearly any text field. Apple says it can generate a draft from a description or give feedback on existing writing, and in Messages and Mail it can match the user's own style, punctuation, and tone.

Siri mode in Camera
iOS 27 adds Siri mode in the Camera app, which works alongside Visual Intelligence. Apple says users can start a visual search directly from the viewfinder to identify objects, ask questions, and take action based on what is in front of the camera.
Visual Intelligence first arrived on iPhone with the iPhone 16 lineup, and Apple has steadily expanded where it shows up across the system.

Apple Intelligence across the apps
Beyond Siri, Apple is threading its Apple Intelligence features deeper into everyday apps like Photos, Mail, Messages, Safari, and more.

Photo editing
The Photos app gains several editing tools.
Spatial Reframing can recompose a shot after it is taken, an Extend tool can expand the borders of an image, and the existing Clean Up tool is being enhanced to remove larger objects. Clean Up debuted in iOS 18 as part of Apple's first wave of Apple Intelligence features.

Image Playground, Apple's image generation tool, is also being upgraded. Apple says it can now produce photorealistic images in addition to its existing styles.
Mail, Messages, and Safari

Messages and Mail will offer contextual Suggestions, such as adding a calendar event or searching for a photo with a single tap. Apple notes this feature is coming in English.

A feature called Call Context can surface relevant information from across a user's apps while placing a call to a business, for example pulling a confirmation code from Mail when calling an airline. It is also listed as coming in English.

Safari is gaining automatic tab organization that groups related pages into topics. A new Safari Notify Me option can monitor a page for changes, such as a price drop or a restock, and alert the user.
Passwords and Shortcuts

The Passwords app can flag weak or compromised logins and update them automatically.

Shortcuts adds the ability to build an automation from a plain language description, with the app connecting actions across multiple apps to carry out the request.

Expanded child safety features
Apple is rolling out a set of child safety tools aimed at giving parents more control during setup and day to day use.
During Setup Assistant, parents can choose exactly which system apps a child can use, and add more later through Ask to Buy.

A new Ask to Browse feature requires kids to request permission before visiting new websites, with parents reviewing the request in Messages before approving.

Communication Safety, which already blurs nudity in Messages and FaceTime, is being expanded to intervene before children see gore or violence in shared images and videos.

Parents can also set Time Allowances across categories such as Entertainment, Games, and Social Media.
Apple says it provides age based guidance developed with clinical and child development experts, and a Schedules option lets parents decide which apps are available at different times or days.
An updated design for parental controls in Settings rounds out the changes.

Performance and design refinements
iOS 27 carries a long list of under the hood improvements.
Apple cites app launches that are up to 30 percent faster, a Photos library that loads new images up to 70 percent faster, and AirDrop transfers that are up to 80 percent faster.
The company attributes part of the gains to an optimized CPU scheduler.
Apple's testing figures were measured on a range of devices, including an iPhone 11 Pro Max, an iPhone 15, and an iPhone 16 Plus running prerelease software, so real world results will vary.
On the design side, Apple is refining Liquid Glass, the translucent interface material it introduced with iOS 26.

The company says the update brings more uniform refraction and improved contrast for better readability, sharper app icons, and a new slider that lets users dial the look from ultra clear to fully tinted.
Other changes include smoother handoffs between Wi-Fi and cellular networks and a new ranking system that surfaces more relevant results in Mail search.
Everything else in iOS 27
Apple listed a number of additional features:
Accessibility. VoiceOver gains richer image descriptions and Action button integration, a new captioning feature can generate synced subtitles for any video and translate existing captions, and Magnifier adds tools for low vision users.
iCloud Shared Albums. It will be easier for friends and family on Android or Windows to join and contribute photos through iCloud.com, with support for full resolution sharing and new filtering and reaction options.
Health. Cycle Tracking can notify users when logged patterns are suggestive of perimenopause, with related symptom tracking and educational resources. Apple notes these notifications are for ages 40 and above and are not a diagnostic tool.
Maps. Flyover now combines aerial imagery with Visual Intelligence models to render details such as architectural fixtures and individual trees.
Home. Apple Intelligence in the Home app can combine related notifications, summarize HomeKit Secure Video footage before it is viewed, and search clips using natural language. Supported cameras can now record in 4K.
AirPods. A new Custom EQ setting lets users adjust lows, mids, and highs.
GymKit. GymKit is coming to iPhone and AirPods Pro 3, allowing connections to compatible cardio equipment for more accurate metrics.
Compatibility and availability
iOS 27 is compatible with iPhone 11 and later, including the second generation iPhone SE and newer.
the full supported lineup runs from the iPhone 11 family up through Apple's latest iPhone 17 models, the iPhone Air, and the iPhone 17e.
iOS 27 is scheduled to launch this fall, typically alongside Apple's new iPhone lineup.
Siri AI will follow in beta later this year in English, and requires an Apple Intelligence enabled device set to a supported language.
One notable caveat: Apple says Siri AI will not initially be available in the European Union on iOS and iPadOS, continuing a pattern of staggered Apple Intelligence rollouts in the region.
