Apple has reshuffled the leadership of its hardware development organization, with newly appointed Chief Hardware Officer Johny Srouji moving to tie chip work and product work more tightly together, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The reorganization comes just months before John Ternus is set to take over as Apple CEO on September 1.

Product Design Oversight

Oversight of Apple's product design group is moving away from Kate Bergeron and splitting between two of her longtime deputies. Shelly Goldberg, who had been running Mac product design, and Dave Pakula, who had overseen product design for Apple Watch, iPad, and AirPods, will now share responsibility for product design across Apple's entire lineup.

Gurman notes that the product design group is distinct from Apple's industrial design group. Industrial design shapes the overall look and concept of a new device, while product design is responsible for turning that concept into something Apple can actually manufacture and ship.

Bergeron is not leaving the company. She is taking on a new role overseeing product reliability across all Apple devices, and she will continue to lead the team that decides which materials are used in Apple's products.

Closer Ties Between Silicon and Products

The reshuffling is reportedly aimed at integrating Apple's in-house silicon teams more closely with the teams designing the products those chips end up in. Srouji, who was promoted to Chief Hardware Officer in April, has spent years running Apple's chip efforts and is now responsible for hardware more broadly.

Two of Ternus' former deputies will report directly to Srouji as part of the changes. Matt Costello, who has led development of Apple's home and audio products, and Kevin Lynch, who runs a special projects group focused on robotics, are both moving under Srouji.

Wider Reorganization

The Bloomberg report outlines a number of additional role changes across Apple's hardware organization. The overall scope of the reshuffling is significant, and it is happening as Apple prepares for its first CEO change in more than a decade.
