iOS 27 to Bring Major Siri Redesign With Dedicated Chat App

Apple is overhauling Siri in iOS 27, evolving the assistant into a more capable chatbot and AI agent aimed to compete with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Siri will largely live in the Dynamic Island in iOS 27, and Apple is building a dedicated Siri app for the first time.

Dynamic Island Interface

When Siri is activated with the wake word or the iPhone's side button, a pill shaped animation will appear in the Dynamic Island. After a question or task is issued, Siri is said to display a transparent results card. Swiping on that card brings up a conversation mode that resembles an iMessage thread, with small inline cards for the weather, notes, upcoming appointments, and other relevant information.

A new system wide search gesture is also reportedly coming. Swiping down from the top center of the display in any app will activate a "Search or Ask" bar in the Dynamic Island for typing or speaking questions. Gurman describes the interface as similar to Spotlight Search, but able to surface more advanced results and pull additional data from within apps.

Dedicated Siri App

The standalone Siri app will allow users to look back at prior chats and start new ones. According to the report, the app features a grid of rectangles showing summaries of past conversations, a search bar, and a "+" button for starting a new chat. Users will be able to upload images and documents, and either type or speak to Siri.

While Siri is the default for the new search bar, pressing on it will let users select other chatbots, such as ChatGPT or Gemini. The change lines up with a separate report suggesting Apple plans to let users choose third party AI services as the default for Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools and Image Playground.

Device Compatibility

Apple's Siri redesign is expected to lean on the company's revamped Apple Intelligence platform, so at least some aspects of the new interface will likely be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer. The Dynamic Island itself debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro, but the broader Apple Intelligence feature set has so far required more recent hardware.

Launch Timing

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 27 during its WWDC 2026 keynote on June 8, with a public release in the fall. Apple has not commented on the report.
