MacBook Ultra Could Launch as Early as September
Apple's heavily rumored MacBook Pro overhaul, expected to be branded the MacBook Ultra, could arrive sooner than previously thought, according to a new report from research firm Omdia.

Apple's heavily rumored MacBook Pro overhaul, expected to be branded the MacBook Ultra, could arrive sooner than previously thought, according to a new report from research firm Omdia.
The report primarily covers the broader shift toward OLED displays in laptops, but it includes several details about Apple's next high end notebook along the way. The most notable is the timeline.
A potential third quarter launch
Omdia says Samsung will begin supplying displays for the two MacBook Ultra sizes starting in July, with the devices expected to launch in the third quarter of 2026.
A third quarter launch would most likely point to a September debut, since Apple rarely introduces major new products in July or August.
If accurate, that would put the new Mac on the same stage as Apple's fall iPhone announcements.
The timing is a surprise. Recent reports had suggested the MacBook Ultra would arrive no earlier than October or November, with some pointing to a possible slip into early 2027 due to supply chain constraints. An earlier debut would move the launch up by several months.

Two slightly larger screen sizes
The report also lists the new laptop's screen sizes as 14.3 inches and 16.3 inches. The current MacBook Pro is offered in 14.2 inch and 16.2 inch sizes.
The small difference could be a rounding discrepancy, or it could indicate that the MacBook Ultra displays will be marginally larger, possibly the result of slimmer bezels.
A new approach to the OLED panel
Omdia also details the specific display technology Apple is said to be using. According to the firm, Apple is moving to a hybrid OLED panel built on oxide TFT and RGB tandem OLED technology.
Omdia practice leader Jerry Kang said the combination is being used in this form factor for the first time and is "designed to reduce power consumption" compared with LTPO and single layer RGB OLED panels.
That efficiency could matter a great deal. A more power efficient display would give Apple room to make the MacBook Ultra thinner while still delivering battery life comparable to today's MacBook Pro models.
What the MacBook Ultra is rumored to be
The "MacBook Ultra" name itself comes from reports by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has said Apple is preparing to drop the "Pro" branding in favor of "Ultra" for its top tier laptop, extending the naming already used on the Apple Watch Ultra and Apple's highest end chips.
The machine is also rumored to be the first Mac with a touchscreen, a claim originally made by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and later corroborated by Gurman.
Gurman has reported that the laptops will run on M6 chips and feature thinner and lighter designs, part of what he has described as Apple's goal of building the thinnest products in their categories across the industry.
Other rumors point to a redesigned camera cutout similar to the iPhone's Dynamic Island, replacing the notch found on current models.
Apple has not commented on any of these reports, and the company typically does not confirm products before announcing them. It is not yet clear whether Apple will use the "Ultra" name or keep the MacBook Pro branding when the new laptops are unveiled.
