OLED iPad mini Could Launch Later This Year

Apple is expected to launch a new iPad mini with an OLED display in the second half of 2026, marking the first time the small form factor tablet will move away from LCD technology, according to multiple reports.
The successor to the iPad mini 7, which Apple released in October 2024, is rumored to bring a faster chip, a better display, and improved water resistance. Here is a rundown of what to expect.

Processor
Apple is working on a next generation iPad mini, codenamed J510/J511, that uses the A19 Pro chip, according to information found in code that Apple mistakenly shared in August.
The A19 Pro already powers the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 Pro models. The iPhone 17 Pro uses the higher tier version of the chip with a 6 core CPU and a 6 core GPU, while the iPhone Air uses a mid tier version with one fewer GPU core.
If the code leak is accurate, the iPad mini 8 is likely to use the mid tier A19 Pro found in the iPhone Air. The current iPad mini 7 uses the A17 Pro with a 5 core GPU, one fewer than the version of the same chip found in the iPhone 15 Pro.
The A19 Pro is built on TSMC's third generation 3nm process and includes a 16 core Neural Engine and an upgraded GPU architecture. Apple has said the GPU offers up to 3x the peak compute of the previous generation.
There is an outside chance that Apple uses the newer A20 Pro chip instead. The claim was made by a MacRumors tipster who analyzed a macOS kernel debug kit containing internal Apple codenames. The iPad mini has not always launched with Apple's newest A series chip, however, the A19 Pro cannot be ruled out. The A20 Pro is expected to debut in the iPhone 18 Pro models and is reportedly being fabricated on TSMC's 2nm process.

Display
Apple's plan to move the iPad mini from LCD to OLED is widely rumored. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the iPad mini is likely to be the next Apple device to adopt OLED. A Chinese leaker with sources in Apple's supply chain has said Apple evaluated a Samsung made OLED panel for the device.
It is not yet clear whether the iPad mini 8 will feature a higher refresh rate than the 60Hz panel used in the current model. Since the base iPhone 17 now uses a 120Hz ProMotion display, it would be reasonable to expect the same on the first OLED iPad mini.
A separate report has suggested the screen could grow from 8.3 inches to 8.7 inches with the switch to OLED.
OLED panels can individually control each pixel, resulting in deeper blacks, stronger contrast, more accurate colors, and faster response times than LCD. All of Apple's flagship iPhones use OLED, and the company brought the technology to the iPad Pro in May 2024.
Unlike the iPad Pro, which uses a two stack low temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panel, the iPad mini may use a single stack low temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panel. That would likely make the iPad mini dimmer than the iPad Pro, but still a major step up from LCD.

Chassis Design
Apple is reportedly working to make the iPad mini 8 more water resistant, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The updated casing would bring protection closer to that of the iPhone, making the tablet safer to use in damp environments.
To achieve this, Apple is said to have designed a new vibration based speaker system that eliminates the need for traditional speaker holes. By using sound emitting surfaces instead of open grilles, the company can reduce potential entry points for water and dust.
The iPhone relies on adhesives and gaskets to shield speakers and other openings from moisture. The iPad mini's approach appears to go further by removing the holes altogether. Current iPad mini models lack any official IP rating, but the upcoming version could be the first in the lineup to feature a certified level of water protection.
Apple patents could offer clues to the new design. A 2014 patent outlines a "mechanically actuated panel acoustic system" that vibrates flat surfaces to generate sound, effectively turning parts of a device's chassis into a speaker diaphragm.
Release Date
According to research firm Omdia, the iPad mini is expected to adopt OLED in 2027. Korea's ET News and ZDNET Korea have both suggested the update will come in 2026, and Bloomberg has reported it could arrive as soon as this year.
The most recent word on the subject comes from Weibo based leaker Instant Digital, who claims the OLED iPad mini will be launched in the second half of 2026 at the earliest.
A December report by analyst firm Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) said an 8.5 inch OLED iPad mini is planned for a 2026 launch, with 11 inch and 13 inch OLED iPad Air models expected to follow in 2027. That timing aligns with separate reporting that an OLED iPad Air will arrive in early 2027.
No source has named a specific release date, but a launch later in 2026 appears likely.
Pricing
The new iPad mini is expected to cost more than the current model, with Apple potentially charging up to $100 more, according to Bloomberg's Gurman. The iPad mini currently starts at $499, which would put the OLED model at around $599.
Gurman has previously argued that Apple should consider a lower end version of the iPad mini, or at least a change to its $499 starting price, given that the device competes with rival tablets that cost significantly less.
For shoppers looking for a more affordable iPad, the 10th generation iPad starts at $319 on Amazon and offers features such as Touch ID and Center Stage, though without the iPad mini's smaller form factor or A series Pro chip.
